Forget pumpkin spice: For dogs at Jacksonville Beach, the best part of fall is all-day beach time.

The city lifted its daytime restrictions on dogs Oct. 1, allowing them on the beach at any hour through March 31. The change is part of a seasonal schedule in the city’s animal ordinances, which bar dogs from the beach between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. from April 1 through Sept. 30.

Under the ordinance, dogs must remain on a leash no longer than 8 feet while on the beach. They may swim in the ocean off leash if they stay within their owner’s sight and voice control, but they must be leashed again immediately after leaving the water. The exception does not allow owners to walk dogs in the surf or play fetch.

Owners must also carry proof of a current rabies vaccination and pick up after their dogs. Dogs are prohibited in the dunes at all times.

Violations of City Ordinance 5-41 carry a $55 fine.

The city also operates Paws Park, and off-leash membership dog park at 468 Penman Road South. The park has separate areas for small and large dogs, along with water bowls and benches, and is wheelchair accessible.
