Middleburg man accused of binding, strangling girlfriend’s dog in recorded attack

Middleburg dog strangling suspect Cole Daughtry

MIDDLEBURG, Fla. — A Clay County man is accused of binding his girlfriend’s dog with tape and strangling her to death in an attack investigators say was caught on video.

Cole Daughtry, 25, of Middleburg, was arrested Aug. 8 on a felony charge of aggravated animal cruelty, according to a Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

The investigation began Aug. 2 after Daughtry’s live-in girlfriend, Alexis Clark, reported that he had killed her dog, Nina, a Chiweenie.

Clark told investigators she and Daughtry shared a cellphone and she discovered several videos of the alleged killing while looking through older recordings on the phone.

According to the report, the videos showed Nina with blue tape wrapped around her legs and muzzle while Daughtry allegedly strangled her. Clark identified Daughtry in the recordings by the tattoos on his hands.

Investigators said a second witness later told deputies that Daughtry admitted to killing Nina and repeatedly apologized.

Daughtry was detained Aug. 8 and agreed to speak with investigators, according to the report. Deputies said he admitted to binding and strangling Nina and later burying the dog in a wooded area with a friend.

Daughtry remained in the Clay County jail Monday on $75,503 bond.
