A Yulee house fire became a rescue mission for both people and pets after first responders learned two of the home’s three dogs were still trapped inside the smoke-filled home, according to body camera video released by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office.
The fire was reported May 26 at a home on Red Holly Place. According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responding to an unrelated call nearby diverted to the scene after the 911 Communications Center received a report of a residential fire.
Body camera video shows deputies arriving as smoke pours from the home. Outside, the homeowner’s wife tells deputies her husband is still inside, prompting one deputy to rush into the house to search for him.
The deputy soon locates the homeowner in the backyard and escorts him to the front of the house. As first responders continue working the scene, a black German shepherd-type dog can be seen outside the home.

Moments later, the homeowner’s wife can be heard shouting from the driveway that two other dogs are still upstairs inside the home.
According to the sheriff’s office, Nassau County Fire Rescue crews rescued the trapped dogs and quickly extinguished the blaze, which was contained to the kitchen.
“Our deputies are trained to respond when people need help the most, and that’s exactly what they did in this situation,” Sheriff Bill Leeper said in a statement. “Their courage, quick thinking and commitment to protecting others helped bring this incident to a safe conclusion. I am incredibly proud of their actions.”
No injuries to the homeowners or dogs were reported. The cause of the fire was not immediately released.
