The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help identifying the person responsible for abandoning a severely malnourished dog outside a Jacksonville church earlier this month.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, surveillance video shows a silver SUV pulling into a parking space at a church off Philips Highway on July 1. Investigators said someone removed a crate containing the dog, left it in the church parking lot before driving away.
The dog remained there for three days before a church employee discovered it, according to JSO.
Investigators said the dog had been left without food or water and was covered in its own feces when it was found. An animal cruelty examination later determined the dog was extremely malnourished and is now undergoing extensive treatment to recover.
Photos released by the Sheriff’s Office show a small tan dog with matted fur wrapped in a blanket after it was rescued. Investigators also released surveillance images of the vehicle they believe was involved, describing it as a silver SUV.
“There are many options for rehoming dogs, but this is not one of them,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post Wednesday announcing the investigation.
Authorities are asking anyone who recognizes the dog, knows who owns the vehicle or has information that could help identify the person responsible to contact the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office at 904-630-0500.

The investigation remains ongoing.
