According to the the sheriff’s office, Volusia County Animal Services officers found the dog, Tanner, weak and sick, with sores and infections covering his body. He weighed less than 34 pounds when he was taken to the county shelter, the agency said.

After Meyers gave up ownership, Tanner received emergency medical treatment at the shelter, according to the sheriff’s office. Detectives reviewed veterinary records and conducted interviews, and they allege Meyers subjected the dog to a prolonged pattern of neglect.

He denied neglecting the dog, the sheriff’s office said.

County jail records show Meyers was released on a $3,500 bond.

Since arriving at the shelter, Tanner has gained more than 15 pounds and is recovering from multiple infections, according to the agency. Officials said he is expected to make a full recovery and will be put up for adoption once he is ready.
