JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Weeks after a dog found with severe burns became the focus of a joint animal cruelty investigation by Nassau County Animal Services and Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services, the shelter says she’s ready for the next step in her recovery.
NCAS announced Wednesday that the dog, now named Talia, is stable after weeks of treatment and is ready for a long-term foster home. The update comes as records obtained by HomeFetch provide new details about the investigation.
According to the records, Talia was taken to a Jacksonville emergency veterinary hospital after a couple found her with severe burns and brought her in for treatment. Veterinarians initially believed the injuries may have been caused by a chemical, but a forensic examination later concluded they were consistent with burns caused by exposure to fire.
The forensic report concluded Talia’s injuries were “consistent with thermal burns,” adding that the available evidence “supports fire as the cause.” It also concluded investigators could not determine whether Talia’s injuries were a result of an intentional act or accident.
The records further show investigators later determined Talia had been found near the Trout River and Main Street Bridge in Jacksonville, rather than Nassau County as initially believed. That discovery led NCAS and ACPS to open a joint investigation into the case.
In Wednesday's Facebook post, NCAS said Talia has made significant progress but still has a long road to recovery. The shelter is seeking a long-term foster where she can continue healing while receiving ongoing medical care.
"Talia has already endured more than any animal should," the shelter wrote. "She deserves a peaceful place where she can rest, recover, and finally feel safe."
The investigation remains ongoing. Neither agency has announced any criminal charges.
